K three rnds.  This creates a rolled brim.  If a ribbed brim is preferred, K2, P1 will transition nicely to the RT cables.

Rnd 2: *K2, P1. Rep from * to last st. Sl last st to right needle, RM. Sl st back to left needle, PM.

Repeat Rounds 1-2 until hat measures 7” from bottom.

Begin Decrease, switching to DPNs when needed:

Dec Rnd: Having repositioned the marker in the last Round 2, *RT, P1, K2Tog.  Repeat from * around. (36 sts)

Next rnd: K.

K2Tog until 6 sts remain.

Break the yarn leaving an 8” tail.

With a tapestry needle, thread the working yarn through the remaining sts twice around, removing them from the needles as you go and tightening the top of the hat closed.  Thread working yarn to wrong side and weave in all loose ends.  Make a pompom with the remaining yarn and attach to the top.  Steam or wet block your hat to set the sts and give it that polished look.
